The Dark Tower book series was mostly inspired by the poem “Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came” by Robert Browning, whose complete text was added in the Dark Tower Book 7  appendix. In the preface to the revised 2003 edition of  first Dark Tower Book The Gunslinger, Stephen King also identifies the novel by J.R.R. Tolkien – The Lord of the Rings,  as well as Arthurian Legend, and movie The Good, the Bad and the Ugly as inspirations for the Dark Tower series. Stephen King identifies Clint Eastwood’s “Man with No Name” movie character as one of the chief inspirations for the main character, Roland Deschain. Stephen King’s style of place names in the series, for example Mid-World, and Stephen Kings development of a special language for Mid-World , are also influenced by Lord of the Rings.
